THE China Subject Ratings 2024
On March 27th, Times Higher Education (THE) released its China Subject Ratings 2024 report. Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) achieved an outstanding result, with 42 disciplines receiving the highest A+ rating. Notably, three disciplines co-constructed by SAIF—Applied Economics, Industry & Business Administration, and Management Science and Engineering—maintained their A+ designation from the previous year.
Ranking Methodology and Scope
The THE China Subject Ratings evaluated 1,885 universities globally, including 86 institutions from mainland China, across 83 subjects within 13 subject areas. The ratings were based on a scale ranging from A+ to C-, utilizing data from the THE World University Rankings 2024, the THE China Reputation Survey 2023 and 2024, the THE Academic Reputation Survey 2023 and 2024, and Elsevier bibliometrics. The results indicated that universities in mainland China achieved an average grade of B+ across all subjects, outperforming the global average of B.
Significance of the THE China Subject Ratings
The THE China Subject Ratings is the only performance assessment scale for Chinese universities that aligns with the Chinese Ministry of Education's discipline classification system and provides a global benchmarking reference. The rating encompasses the core missions of research-intensive universities, including Teaching (learning environment), Research (publications, revenue, and reputation), International Outlook (international academic staff, students, and co-authorships), and Industry Revenue (knowledge transfer).
